Mr. Andrzej Waldemar Chodkiewicz, Consul General of Poland in St. Petersburg arrived in Vologda.
This was the first visit of the Consul General to Vologda. The main objective of the visit was to get acquainted with the trade, economic, social, cultural and tourism potential of the Vologda Region.
Mr. Andrzej Waldemar Chodkiewicz met with Deputy Governor Alexei Kozhevnikov to define guidelines for further cooperation between the Vologda Region and Poland.
Geographical conditions associated with a high degree of forest cover and large amounts of water basins, the interesting offer of universities and economic institutions - these are the factors that create favorable ground for development of cooperation between Lubusz Voivodeship (Poland) and Vologda Oblast.
Poland is one of the active trade partners of the Vologda Region. Ferrous metals, fertilizers, wood and wood-working articles dominate the oblast's export to Poland. Poland imports technical and electronic equipment, vehicles and chemicals to Vologda.
In 2015 foreign trade turnover between the Vologda Oblast and Poland amounted to US$177 mln. The imports to the Vologda Oblast are made up, for the most part, of chemicals and equipment.
The Vologda Region has been sustaining partnership ties with Polish companies for years.
Last year the Vologda Oblast Governor and Chairman of the Management Board of Barlinek SA, Poland-based company engaged in wooden flooring production, signed a cooperation agreement within the framework of the International Investment Forum Sochi-2015.
According to the agreement signed, about EUR 80 mln will be invested to construct a plywood-producing plant in Cherepovets District, Vologda Oblast.
The proposed project aims to achieve the successful development of a plywood and floorboard manufacturing facility. The plant will have a maximum capacity of 100,000 cubic meters of plywood a year, 2 mln square meters of floorboard and 30,000 cubic meters of wood pellets. It will employ about 500 people.
On April 20, 2016 Polish President Andrzej Duda awarded Severstal Distribution (part of Severstal Russian Steel) as an employee-friendly company in his residence in Warsaw.
Relations in the sphere of culture are also strong. Polish experts are active participants of international events arranged in the Vologda Region – International Lace Festival VITA LACE and VOICES (VOlogda Independent Cinema from European Screens).
The well-known Polish director Krzysztof Zanussi visited the Vologda Region twice. Polish films repeatedly became prize-winners of the VOICES festival.
“We are looking forward to continue cooperation in trade and economic spheres and we invite representatives of business circles of Poland to visit the Vologda Oblast with a business mission in 2016 – 2017”, summed up Deputy Governor Alexei Kozhevnikov.
